Let me start by saying I have nothing against Taylor Swift. I personally don’t like her songs, but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t been successful. Sunday night at the American Music Awards, Taylor won big. She took home 5 AMAs, and in addition, she also won Artist of the Decade. With those five wins, Swift became the all-time winningest artist at the AMAs.

She won for Favorite Artist – Adult Contemporary, Favorite Album, Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Music Video, and Artist of the year.

She beat out Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish for Female Artist, which was a head scratcher for me. As someone who doesn’t pay attention to music nowadays, even I know the cultural impact Eilish and Grande have had on the industry this year, but alas, they gave the award to Swift.

Swift also beat out P!nk and Maroon 5 for Favorite Adult Contemporary, which I can agree with. When it comes to the music video category, I felt the message behind her video warranted her win.

The only category I feel she didn’t deserve to win was Artist of the Decade. Her name is now amongst past winners, including Elvis, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and Garth Brooks. Swift has had a lot of success, don’t get me wrong, but I feel there are other artists who also deserved this award. Names like Adele, Bruno Mars, Drake, and Beyonce are ones that pop into my head. They have all seen similar success this decade, and I feel that in the grand scheme of music history, their names deserve to be there more than hers. But at the end of the day, they chose Taylor for a reason. She is now immortalized as the Artist of the Decade of the 2010s. Do I agree with this selection? No. Can I change it? No. So that’s the way it’s going to be.
