Top 5 Superbowl 2020 Commercials

Story by Nicole Haberek, Staff Writer and Editor

This past Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers with a 31-20 win. Not only was the game entertaining to watch, but the commercials airing between the big game were just as fun to watch. Here is a recap of the top 5 commercials that aired during the game.

5. Rocket Morgage

This commercial featured Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa. The commercial didn’t have much to do with mortgages, but it was a good laugh anyway. In the commercial, Momoa transformed from his normal muscular self into a scrawny, bald man in the comfort of his mansion. Momoa’s built body is what he is known for, so seeing him in a different way was hilarious to many people.

4. Planters

This commercial made the list because of the confusing nature of it. Last week, Planters made an announcement on its Instagram that Mr. Peanut had died, but in light of recent events with the death of Kobe Bryant, the campaign was postponed. During the commercial, however, Mr. Peanut supposedly sacrificed himself and died by falling off a cliff. The commercial then cut to Mr. Peanut’s funeral that was attended by Mr. Clean and the Kool-Aid Man. A tear shed by the Kool-Aid Man then sprouted baby Mr. Peanut. This commercial surely confused a lot of people, but it was entertaining nonetheless.

3. Hyundai – Smaht Pahk

This commercial starring Chris Evans, John Krasinski, and Rachel Dratch was comedy gold. Featuring all native New Englanders, they used over the top Boston accents to talk about the new park assist feature on the new Hyundais. The commercial was funny initially, but the cameo made by David Ortiz at the end when he was above the three actors in a city apartment window made the commercial one to remember.

2. Google

This commercial took a different spin rather than comedy. It was a very moving commercial that brought tears to the eyes of many. The commercial featured an old man using the Google Assistant to help him remember things about his wife who passed away. The commercial was actually inspired by a true story of a grandfather of a Google employee which made it all the more touching.

1. Hulu

The number one commercial that won the night was the Hulu commercial starring Patriots quarterback himself, Tom Brady. Prior to this commercial, Brady posted a photo to his Instagram of him in the tunnel of a stadium, the same stadium that was featured in the commercial. Fans everywhere have been wondering if Brady is planning to retire or continue playing. The commercial made it seem as if the quarterback who many think is the “greatest of all time” was announcing his retirement, but in reality, he was just explaining all that Hulu has to offer. In the end, he stated that he, “was not going anywhere.”
